I am loving your story. Why hasn't there been an Arizona based dystopian Sci Fi? I love the details, the cultural tid bits you are adding, and above all, the warning cloaked in some humor. Keep it up Dave:)
On the whole, an intriguing look at a potential future Tucson. I'm interested to note the reference to the wearing of keffiyahs. A keffiyah, a traditional square scarf worn by men in parts of the Middle East, has spread around the world. Outside the Middle East, it can be seen not just as something to wear in a hot, dry climate but also as a political statement. According to one source I've found online: "Today, the keffiyeh is worn internationally by Palestinians and supporters of their cause for liberation and sovereignty." See https://inventthefuture.substack.com/p/wearing-my-keffiyeh-an-act-of-resistance for details.
Enjoyed how you are introducing Luna’s parents into the story. It will be interesting how you might weave their professions/educations into the story. Loving the background introduction of “Mac”. I’m more than ready for the next chapter …

Got my thoughts drifting on a Sunday morning, like a desert dirigible, including a bit or turbulence. Thanks. I’m pretty sure thanks. Still drifting.
