From Washington, who insisted on a Free Press for our new country, to Jefferson, whose persistence and support of education continued that 'defense,' to author Timothy Snyder who, today, often sees what we do not see! All are both historic and contemporary zealots of truth. I'll add my candidate: Rachel Maddow (MSNBC). Maddow is my present-day journalist heroine. She is everything that is needed to 'add' understanding and explanation to her contributions on air and on paper. Her research of fact is relentless in a world full of innuendo. For all that you need to know, ought to know, and want to know ... meet Rachel Maddow. --- Locally, I'm less enthusiastic. I remember when Tucson had a morning AND an afternoon newspaper. Today, we don't HAVE a local and common news source at all. As our mail goes to Phoenix, even if the birthday card is for a next-door neighbor, so does our Tucson newspaper circle back from Phoenix, that northern city that's 'downhill' all the way from the high desert of "the Old Pueblo." Sad.
Rachel Maddow is fabulous and I agree she is smart, insightful and totally knows what she talking about since her research is impeccable! A true reporter for our times.
BTW, should the criminal not be elected (I fervently wish) and he foments violence, Biden should arrest him for subversion and domestic terrorism. The supreme court has OK'ed that act by a sitting president. Just do it, Joe.
You mean "The feckless Washington Post that HAD a noble slogan beneath their masthead. "Democracy dies in darkness”. that refused to print any political endorsements. My subscription ... gone.
I would add: stay engaged with your neighbors, coworkers and discuss! current events whenever with whom ever you can. We so need simple dialog with the angry, alienated trumpers. This is not over with this election as we have unfortunately experienced after -yea! Biden’s election. We need to get back our United status in this country.
I agree wholeheartedly! However. I am taking a bit of a break today to try and calm my anxiety until the later results come in. Also, my husband refuses to listen to any more news. But I already read all the sources you mention, as well as The NY Times & WaPo. But your column is my favorite! Thanks for everything!
Inspired and insightful as always. Thank you, Dave for doing yout part to rally the progressive troops. As Kamala said yesterday, it may take a while, but we will win!
Fitz, you complimented the Holocaust survivors because you were impressed by their depth of their knowledge of current events. You said, “A lovely old woman spoke up and said, ‘Back in Germany in the thirties many in my family didn't follow the news. They paid the price.’”
Last night proved the vast majority of voters in this country didn’t follow the news here, either (or they purposely chose racist and misogynistic candidate)—and now the U.S. and the world will pay the price.
Thank you for sounding the alarm so clearly. Unfortunately, those that needed to hear it, weren’t listening.
My first husband, Fletch, used to kid me about my news obsession. He called me an info nympho. He’d take regular news breaks saying “if something big happens, I’ll hear about it.” He’s dead now but I post the big things that happen on the guest pages of his Legacy.com page to keep him up-dated. Guess I’ll have to post something tomorrow like I did in November 2016. Ugh. Thanks for plugging the Secular AZ Substack. We’ll continue the fight for church/state separation no matter what. Keep up the good trouble my friend.
Thank you, Fitz! Yes I have five of the news outlets you mentioned in my inbox everyday. Also Ian Bremmer and Lulu Garcia - Navarro are required reading/ listening. News junkie here, for sure ✌️♥️💙🌊
I have some art to send you that could be spread today, in hopes they all get defeated. I don't know how to post them here, but I think your readers will enjoy. The Dem Headquarters wouldn't hang them. So I took them back. Some famous Repub portraits before I got sick of looking at them. . .

Thanks David. News is in our DNA.

Now THAT'S a plan! "Go, Kamala!"

Bye-bye, Ms. American pie!!

I would add the new Tucson Spotlight to your list.
