Family history is usually filled with pathos, and takes courage and persistence to overcome adversity. Hope you get to visit all places in your family history!
As a New Yorker who spends half the year in Scottsdale, glad to see you enjoying the city. Of course, my idea of a summer in NY is my home on Long Island, a train ride away. Complete with grass, trees, flowers, cool breezes and beautiful beaches.
Thank you for making me nostalgic about everything. My husband used to call me a "professional New Yorker" and that wasn't a compliment. Since you love your whole ancestry thing (I'm first generation American) and I love mine too, in case it's not on your list, I think you will enjoy the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. Neither of my parents ever lived there--my mother lived in Harlem-- but it gives the flavor of living in a tenement. Have a fabulous trip. How wonderful for you that you're at the Essex in a perfect location. When I grew up, it was an apartment building.
Beautiful! My grandparents all came from Poland. Except for a little bit about my maternal line, I know nothing about my ancestors before them. I’m not sure if I want to know, but I’m know it was almost as colorful as yours!
forgot to add...my grandparents were immigrants from Sicily...when they came to America in 1904...this nation was much more accepting of people like them who were poor, non-English speaking, and eager to make a home for their ten children...!!!
I've been away on my own (though not as noteworthy) adventures..Getting caught up on yours.
You're in the city where i was born and spent the first 34 years there. Enjoy.

enjoyed this piece very much. when i was 15 living in New Haven, friends and i would skip school head for NYC and have a ball.
Although the excursions were short-lived, they were full of wonder and fun.

as a former New Yorker...this commentary speaks to me in a very personal way...bless you always for penning the truth...

This resonates.
What a beautiful ode to the American experience and all the immigrants who have helped shape each of us who came after.
