A little story about Goldwater:

In 1964, Barry lived on the hill behind our house and was a member of our Home Owners Assoc.., so he came home to vote for himself at the Country Day School, two doors down from our house. Of course, the Pres were all there to record it. We voted early and were listening to them asking their questions. Then Barry Jr. walked up and said, "Im going in yo vote now, Dad." Barry said, "Good." Barry Jr. was gone a long time.

Those were te days when you could pull one lever to vote straight Republican or vote for individuals by pulling each person you wanted individually. When Barry Jr. finally walked out, Barry growled, "What the hell took you so long?"

The Press loved it. Janice

History and why are we so doomed to repeat it? Can’t we just repeat the good stuff and leave the uglies behind. The Democratic Party has two years to get it together for our next election and let’s hope it’s not too late. I’m more of an optimist person and will hang onto “hope springs eternal”.

Thank you for the perspective offered in this column. I was not familiar with the Goldwater quote, but will now keep it in my file along with H. L. Menken's "As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron."

Even a pendulum eventually slows to a neutral stop half way between extremes. We can only hope that the damge caused inroute is not too disasterous.

Lest we forget, the "Sainted" Kennedy brothers were pro McCarthy. Front row seats!

I hope it is soon as I am old and hope to experience it.!!!

It is so sad to see our country moving backwards. I remember Ev Mecham. Didn't you draw him with a price tag on his hat?

I did! And my cartoonist hero and friend Steve Benson was the first to skewer his fellow Mormon, savagely. Steve renounced, became apostate and remains one of the finest ever. Love that man.

Your humor is helping ease some of the sting, no stab of daily reality.

Yep. I've lived in Tucson since 1971, with a TO in WA for a family illness. FITZ (young compared to me) has been here for much of the AZ "Been There and Done That" era. I'll mention another: The present 'situation' with water. Our "WHAT did we know and WHEN did we know it?" began in the 1960s. By 1971, UA hydrologists Kelso, Martin ,and Mack wrote of how the CAP was based on a flood year of the Colorado River that never came again ... yet CAP was built. Conservation and banking ground water came late Today, we ARE where we ARE. Not in a good place with water, which is life.
