“We have 13 days left to win this election! Will you get out the vote with Team Kamala this weekend at an event near you, David?”
I got a call from my friend Sue on Tuesday. “The Governor will be at my house tomorrow.” Sue was hosting a Wednesday afternoon canvassing effort on the northwest side of Tucson in legislative district 17.
Forty four volunteer canvassers working to turn Arizona blue showed up hoping to flip our legislature for the first time in 50 years. There were first timers and veterans and old friends and new friends who were there because they all understood the assignment; a joyful group relishing the fight. This was an important afternoon. This band of volunteers would be cheered on by their two democratic candidates, Kevin "public service over politics” Volk and John McClean, an impressive entrepreneurial business leader, and Madame Governor Katie Hobbs.
First we heard from Rodrigo, then Governor Hobbs, then candidates McClean and Volk. Rodrigo Guerrero is the Arizona Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee field organizer. The ADLCC is a project of the Arizona Democratic Party. Check out their website: Mobilize ADLCC
Governor Hobbs cheered on the canvassers.
John McClean, candidate for State Senate thanked the volunteers.
Kevin Volk for State House of Representatives thanked the volunteers.
The energized volunteers picked up their packets, hydrated and studied their “MiniVAN” apps.
The MiniVAN app maps out the doors upon which to rap thy knuckles. Here it is explained:
“When running a campaign, face-to-face conversations are the most effective method to persuade and turn out voters. However, traditional paper-packet canvassing is resource-intensive. By using MiniVAN for canvassing, you can save time, reduce costs, and enhance the canvasser experience.”
This Minivan touch training video shows you how easy it is to use.:
The Governor posed for selfies and socialized with the troops and then it was time for the troops to knock on their doors.
My son came by after a Saturday canvassing for Kamala.
Back early in the cycle. I asked him, “Is there a script?”
“Yeah. But you can be intuitive. We did sixty doors. I was with two experienced canvassers. It was actually fun. Most people didn’t answer their doors. Some did. We got a ‘We don’t welcome solicitors’ and a ‘Get off my porch’. Most people were friendly.” Then he grinned. “We were never shot at once.” My boy is Bill Clinton smooth.
Now the campaign has less than two weeks to go and the party needs volunteers.
Now more than ever: Mobilize Jump Start Arizona
This time around the happy volunteer canvassers were knocking on the doors of known democrats to cheerfully remind them to vote.
Every vote counts. Hobbs won by 17,000 votes. If not for those 17,000 votes our nutty Trumpian legislature would have been unchained.
If the Democrats turn LD 17 blue they’ll be giving Governor Hobbs and Arizona-dare we hope- a legislature peopled by normal human beings. No more wing nuts wasting the Governor’s time. Our time.
Two more weeks to go. You have just two more weeks to be a part of history. Click here and find your spot: Mobilize Jump Start Arizona
And I’ll see you at the next sign wave.
David Fitzsimmons,
The work that you are doing is truly amazing.
