Here is a political cartoon drawn just for you, my substack subscribers.
Below is a 3:55 minute video I produced demonstrating how I draw a caricature of our next President.
Forty-years and 11,000 cartoons exhausted my affection for the craft which I now feel cannot compete with the immediacy and effectness of memes or short videos. I love memes. These days I’ll look at the work of the few surviving cartoonists who are my peers and yawn. Sorry. It’s a medium from another era.
I’ve been tinkering with memes. Here are a few I’ve posted.
In my youth I was a graphic director at a paper and that is where I fell in love with photographic images. When I moved to the next paper to serve as their political cartoonist I toyed with drawing photo realistic cartoons in a pointillist fashion that was very labor intensive. In my later years I shifted to a more enjoyable Hanna-Barbera retro mid-century style.
Of course from time to time, off the deadline spinning wheel, I can’t resist rendering a simple portrait such as this likeness of Kari Lake with a bit of the Joker mixed in.
Still I am delighted and heartened by the memes and gifs and videos made by young Harris boosters and Trump critics. A few faves:
Harris has unleashed the creative energy of America’s youth and it brings me great joy to see it.
This week I was posting my “Kamala” signs and flags in my yard and on two separate occasions someone passing by the hacienda said, “I like your signs!”
I was surprised. I said “Thanks!”
They were both teenagers who live in the neighborhood. I was stunned. Hey, kids. Harris has awakened a giant.
The videos and memes are great, Fitz, but your cartooning style is welcome. Dated, maybe, but there are those of us who still appreciate it.
Love both the cartoons and the memes - keep it all going!!
